These were the notes I had written in my journal on this day last year.
I believe that real girl power lies in doing good for the folks and community around us – the measure of which lies in the real difference we have made, not just the feminist notch that was gained.
“As I have been rereading and rewatching the articles and speeches from this year’s election, I have been alarmed by the trending theme regarding women “breaking the glass ceiling”.
As if becoming the President were all about a woman’s movement. As if becoming anything is all about a woman’s movement.
Oh for a generation of successful women who seek to serve for the good of others, to do a great job because a great job is what needs to be done, and not just to turn every achievement into some “woman power” issue.
Woman have power. And they have an amazing amount of influence and impact too. Just spend time reading the history of mankind in the Bible. From Genesis to Revelation you will see the power and influence of women.
You will also notice that the women (and men for that matter) that make the most difference are those whose motive is on doing good for the world around them – not just an effort to prove some ridiculous point like “breaking a glass ceiling”.
I pray, that as good and intelligent women, our goals in life are so much higher than this.
And by the way, here’s God message to every single woman alive – “You’ve already shattered the glass ceiling. Now be a good steward with the power and visibility that comes along with it.”
In my estimation, Condoleezza Rice is a wonderful modern day example of a woman who has done just that.
